The Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) provides a standardized benchmark for secure cloud services. As the name suggests, this was originally derived for government departments and agencies but is seeing wider interest and adoption by cloud service providers beyond the Federal Government customer requirements.
In providing a single accreditation to FedRAMP, the cloud service provider and the adopting agencies have a proven, independently audited level of security that is trusted. FedRAMP is mandatory for Federal Agency cloud-delivered services.
The security controls required for FedRAMP compliance are detailed in the FedRAMP System Security Plan (SSP) and drawn from NIST SP 800-53 Revision 4 within the context of a cloud service provider model.
In common with NIST 800-53, security controls include:
- System and Information Integrity (SI) controls – system and configuration file integrity monitoring and intrusion detection are essential
- Risk Assessment (RA) controls – Vulnerability Scanning to be regularly operated
- Identification and Authentication (IA) controls - Hardened build standard to be derived and adhered to
