The protection of Critical National Infrastructure today generally relates to power stations, electric grid infrastructure, and air traffic control systems. However, as a new article in SC Magazine highlights, the advent of smart cities widens the catchment further and all the same rules apply as to any other networked computer system: any software or firmware-based control system will always have the potential to be vulnerable to a cyber attack, either through malware infection to the file system, or through hacking of configuration settings.

The same rules, therefore, apply in terms of security best practices for Smart City Systems, with the need for vulnerability management and patching, Change Control and system integrity monitoring to detect breaches.

We are already seeing the effect referred to by Gartner recently, whereby information security breaches like Sony 'institutionalize more proactive thinking about cyber-security risks'. Cerrudo is right to highlight the need for Smart City technology to recognize the huge significance of breach prevention and plan for the inevitable cyber attacks.
