DNA Testing Firm MyHeritage leaks data on 92M users

Security experts are warning that an IoT botnet is targeting financial firms with DDoS attacks, in what many believe is the first of its kind since the notorious Mirai campaign.

The botnet has been linked to IoTroop/Reaper and just like Mirai, is comprised of a large number of unsecured TVs, DVRs, IP cameras, and home routers. According to Recorded Future, the linked malware is able to exploit a dozen vulnerabilities in these unsecured devices to hijack and conscript them and is capable of updating as new flaws are detected.

House passes bill addressing industrial cyber threats

House lawmakers approved a new bill on Monday that’s aimed at securing technology used to power U.S. critical infrastructure from cyber-attacks.

The bill would codify work the Department of Homeland Security is currently doing to identify cyber threats to industrial control systems and ways to mitigate them.  Industrial control systems are used to run critical services across the United States, including the electric grid, water systems, and manufacturing plants.

Mirai malware success highlights dangerous security threats

A recent report found that cybercriminals have been utilizing the infamous Mirai malware as a framework on which to build enhanced IoT malware with more advanced capabilities since it first appeared in late 2016.

Mirai originally shocked the world with its massive DDoS attack which targeted millions of cheap connected IoT devices, binding IoT devices to form one large connected network, using those devices to deluge website with phony requests, overloading the sites and ultimately knocking them offline.

bank of chile loses $10M in cyber attack

Chilean officials are making cybersecurity a top priority, as they just learned that hackers stole over $10 million from the country’s second-largest bank, Banco de Chile.

The bank publicly disclosed on May 28, 2018, that it had detected a virus that infected thousands of its workstations. As the investigation unfolded, the company learned that the cyber-attack corrupted the master boot records (MBRs) of 9,000 PCs and servers, leaving them unable to reboot. This attack forced the bank to halt nearly all operations May 24 at almost 400 branches throughout the country.
